Search the Projections

The EPDC produces the projections for education attainment using its projections tools (which will soon be available for download). The projections are based on historical trends of primary and secondary school entry. These projections are middle of the road projections; actual future trends will depend on decisions made today and in the near future, and may be higher or lower than our projections. The population and health projections are from the UN.

Steps

Basic Projections Search
  1. Access the projections search through the PROJECTIONS menu and clicking Projections: Search or by using the Search EPDC Projections quick link on the right hand side of the main page. This will bring you to the projections search page where you will choose indicators, countries and years.
  2. You can view the countries grouped by continent, geo-political region, income, or in an alphabetical list by clicking to expand one of these grouping options.
  3. To search the projections, choose one (or more) indicator, country, and year, and click Search on the right hand side of the page. Your results will appear in the same window. Note that you may choose a combination for which data is not available. You may avoid this by using the guided projections search option, which filters the options based on availability of data.
Guided Projections Search
  1. Guided projections search can be accessed by checking the "Guided Search" box on the right hand side of the regular projections search page. You can start your search by making selections in any panel – Country, Indicator, or Year. Once you have made one or more selections, you can click to another panel and the available options will be automatically updated. For example, if you choose to start with indicators, you will see a list of all the indicators contained in the database. Then, if you select one (or more) of the indicators and click to the Country panel, you will receive a list of countries which have data available for your chosen indicator(s). Select the countries in which you are interested, and click to the Year panel. You will be able to see the years for which there are projections for the selected indicator(s) and countries. You can click back to any of the panels to change your selections at any time. On the right hand side of the screen, there is a message that tells you how many data points will be returned, based on your current selections. By clicking Retrieve Data, you will be able to view your results.
  2. The results will be presented in a table. Note that your results may have more than just one page. By clicking on the arrows in the top left corner (above the table), you will be able to access the additional pages. You can also skip ahead by typing the desired page number in the page number box and pressing the Enter key. You can modify the size of the table by changing the percentage dropdown (also located above the table; available only in Internet Explorer).
Filter the Data
  1. If you want to refine your projections search by including additional criteria, you can click Filter the Data, on the search results page, which will enable you to easily switch between indicators, countries, national/sub national levels, and others. Click the Apply Changes button and your results will be updated based on your selections.
Export Your Data
  1. Once you have finished and want to save your results, you can use the Export option on the search results page. This will allow you to export search results in Excel, Adobe Acrobat, or as a tab delimited file. Choose a format and click Export.
Human Capital Projections

The EPDC has developed a Human Capital projections model that allows the user to project the population by education level, overall population growth, and education attainment trends. This model will be most useful for economic and investment planning, for advocacy, and for educational purposes. Detailed instructions are included in the downloadable files.

Steps

  1. You can access the Human Capital Projections either through a link on the main page or by using the PROJECTIONS menu.
  2. On the Human Capital Projections page, you can choose either a blank (not pre-populated) projection or a projection for a specific country (with data that you will be able to modify) from the pull down menu.
  3. After selecting from the drop down menu either a blank or a specific country projection, click Download.
  4. Follow instructions in the file.
DemoEd Education Projections

This is a visual, dynamic planning tool to help education planners and education financers to lay-out cost-efficient strategies to meet their education goals for primary and secondary school. The model makes integrated projections and simulations for population, school enrollment, teacher training, budget, and HIV/AIDS. This tool can be used in technical collaboration with the EPDC.

Steps

  1. You can access the DemoEd Education Projections either through a link on the main page or by using the PROJECTIONS menu.
  2. Download and run the Vensim Reader installer.
  3. Make a folder on your computer for your model and choose a country from the drop down menu to download a zip file containing an Excel file and a Vensim model. Save these in the folder that you created.
  4. Start the model and teach yourself, or work through our online course and do the suggested homework assignments below. To view the lessons, you need to have Flash (8 or above), which is available free from Adobe.
Note: After unzipping the downloaded files, open the file with an HTML extension in order to view the lesson.
