Education projections are an important tool to support planning decisions and guide effective resource allocation. EPDC has developed a series of projection tools for different planning purposes and has made education projections for over 200 countries. EPDC is a founding member of the Inter-Agency Network for Education Simulation Models. All the models are online.

GPE Milestones

The Global Partnership for Education (GPE) provides developing country partners the incentives, resources, and technical support to build and implement sound education plans. Members of the Partnership mobilize and coordinate resources to support the achievement of these plans' targets to help more children enrol in school and for a better education. A more detailed description of the Global Partnership for Education can be found at www.globalpartnership.org. EPDC is currently assisting the Secretariat with milestone development for GPE's Results Framework.

In 2009, UNESCO’s Education for All Global Monitoring report team engaged EPDC to calculate the finance gaps of achieving EFA goals in the world’s poorest countries. Projections were made for 47 countries, and include pre-school, primary and lower secondary enrolment, support for marginalized children, adult literacy, gender parity, and improved resources for schools. The results include projections of enrolment rates, pupils, teacher needs, classrooms and materials, as well as costs for these inputs and subsidies for marginalized pupils. The projections calculate the finance gap for each country. All the results are contained in one, international model in Excel that can be accessed here. In addition, this page has links to the Global Monitoring Report, the Background paper, as well as supporting materials for those interested in using the model to make their own projections.

In the next decades, how will the educational attainment in the labor force change, in particular, among young workers? How can education policy affect those changes? These are questions the Workforce model is designed to answer. The result of a combined effort of the EPDC and UNESCO, the Workforce model is a visual and interactive tool with which policy makers and planners can project future changes in the education make-up of the labor force. By including both sides of education – namely its provision and its output – the model aims to facilitate and improve discussions between the providers of education and those who use its outcomes. The Workforce model contains data for multiple countries and can be used for comparative studies as well.

EPDC has been customizing HIPE (High-level Interactive Projections for Education) model to help the Ministries of Education in Namibia, Pakistan and Southern Sudan to strengthen their capacity to use education data for evidence-based decision making and budget planning. EPDC staff has conducted workshop and training on the use of education data, data visualization, and projection models to Ministry officials in these countries.

EPDC has engaged in developing education projection models since 2004. This page includes the earlier models, which have been replaced by newer versions, or are no longer in active usage. We present them for those who wish to continue to use them, as well as to provide continuity.
