SERCE and PERCE

Segundo Estudio Regional Comparativo y Explicativo (SERCE) Latin American Laboratory for Assessment of the Quality of Education (LLECE)

The Segundo Estudio Regional Comparativo y Explicativo (SERCE) was administered in 16 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean by Latin American Laboratory for Assessment of the Quality of Education (LLECE) in 2006. Results for SERCE are not comparable with results from PERCE, which was administered by LLECE in 1997. SERCE, which was administered to children in the 3rd & 6th grades of formal school measures student ability in the areas of reading, mathematics, and science.

SERCE scores are scaled to have an international average value of 500 and a standard deviation of 100 points. This means that 68% of scores can be expected to fall within 100 points of 500, and 95% of scores can be expected to fall within 200 points of 500. Reading ability level benchmarks established by SERCE offer some understanding of the ability levels associated with different score levels.

Leveled indicators can be found in the other research documents folder: Supplementary Data for SERCE 2006

Primer Estudio Regional Comparativo y Explicativo (PERCE) Latin American Laboratory for Assessment of the Quality of Education (LLECE)

The Primer Estudio Regional Comparativo y Explicativo (PERCE) was administered in 12 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean by Latin American Laboratory for Assessment of the Quality of Education (LLECE) in 1997. Results for SERCE are not comparable with results from PERCE, which was administered by LLECE in 1997. PERCE, which was administered to children in the 3rd & 4th grades of formal school measures student ability in the areas of reading and mathematics.

PERCE scores are scaled to have an international average value of 250 and a standard deviation of 50 points. This means that 68% of scores can be expected to fall within 50 points of 250, and 95% of scores can be expected to fall within 100 points of 250. Reading ability level benchmarks established by PERCE offer some understanding of the ability levels associated with different score levels. Because PERCE scores are not available as means, they are not included in the EPDC data base.

Note that although the PERCE report disaggregates data for public and private schools, this is actually done only for schools in urban areas. For this reason, the public/private disaggregation is not collected by EPDC.  PERCE divides school locations into megacities, urban areas, and rural areas. EPDC used data on the number and percentage of students performing at each benchmark level in each area to calculate aggregate urban (urban + megacity) indicators for these data.
