The EGRA and EGMA assessment models are designed to provide simple, low-cost measures of literacy and numeracy. In 2006, RTI International began developing EGRA as an early reading assessment under the USAID EdData II project. EGMA followed a few years later as an assessment of early math skills. Both assessments are oral and examine the basic skills that underpin development of reading and numeracy skills. For reading, the skills tested include letter recognition, phonemic awareness, reading simple words, and listening comprehension. The math skills tested include number recognition, comparisons, and ordering sets of objects. EGRA has been administered in at least 11 countries and 19 languages under the EdData II program and has been used in more than 30 countries and 60 languages by other organizations. The adaptation of EGRA into different languages remains a challenge as the speed and process of learning can vary by language.
Of the many foundational skills measured in EGRA and EGMA assessments, EPDC has selected those that align with the reading and math categories used in the EPDC database. EGRA and EGMA measures are adapted to EPDC categories as follows:
