Adjusted net enrollment rate

Total number of pupils of the official school age group who are enrolled at primary or secondary education levels, expressed as a percentage of the corresponding population.

Age specific attendance rate

Age Specific Attendance Rates are defined as children in any specific age group attending school, irrespective of whether they are attending the appropriate stage in the school.

Age-specific fertility rate

Number of births to women in a particular age group, divided by the number of women in that age group. The age groups used are: 15-19, 20-24,.45-49. The data refer to five-year periods running from 1 July to 30 June of the initial and final years.

Completion rate

The total number of students completing (or graduating from) the final year of primary or secondary education, regardless of age, expressed as a percentage of the population of the official primary or secondary graduation age.

Dropout rate

Proportion of pupils from a cohort enrolled in a given grade at a given school year who are no longer enrolled in the following school year.

Number of grades (years) in a given level of education.

Educational attainment

The highest grade completed within the most advanced level attended in the educational system of the country where the education was received.

Ending month of the academic year

The month of the calendar year (1=January, 12=December) that the academic year officially ends.

The number of female teachers at a given level of education expressed as a percentage of the total number of teachers (male and female) at the same level in a given school year

Ratio of the female-to-male values of a given indicator. A GPI of 1 indicates parity between sexes.

Gross attendance rate

Total attendance in a specific level of education, regardless of age, expressed as a percentage of the eligible  official school-age population corresponding to the same level of education in a given school year.

Gross enrollment rate

Total enrollment in a specific level of education, regardless of age, expressed as a percentage of the official school-age population corresponding to the same level of education in a given school-year. Often higher than 100% because of repetition and overage students.

Gross intake rate

Total number of new entrants in first grade of primary education, regardless of age, expressed as a percentage of the population at the official primary school-entrance age.

New entrants in the first grade of primary education who are of the official primary school entrance age, expressed as a percentage of the population of the same age.

Non-salary current costs as a percentage of public current education expenditure

The percentage of public current education expenditure represented by non-salary costs.  Current expenditure in education refers to the portion of the budget devoted to costs that are anticipated on a recurrent, or yearly basis, of which salaries typically represent the most significant portion.  Other recurrent costs can include rent, minor repairs, and resources such as textbooks and teaching materials.

Number of teachers

Teachers and teaching staff refer to persons employed in an official capacity for the purpose of guiding and directing the learning experience of learners, irrespective of qualifications or the delivery mechanism, i.e. whether face-to-face and/or at a distance. This definition excludes educational personnel who have no active teaching duties (e.g. headmasters who do not teach) or work occasionally or in a voluntary capacity in educational institutions (e.g. parents).

Government expenditure on health care expressed as an average per person, for a given country, in equivalent U.S. dollars.

Percent of New entrants to primary education with ECCE experience

Number of new entrants to primary grade 1 who have attended some form of organized Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) program for the equivalent of at least 200 hours, expressed as a percentage of total number of new entrants to primary grade 1.

Percent of pupils at correct age for grade

% Pupils with correct age for grade is defined as the total number of pupils whose age at the beginning of the school year is equal to the official age for the grade they are attending, expressed as a percentage of the total number of pupils, regardless of age, attending the grade.

Percentage Ever attended school

The percentage of the population that has ever attended school.

Percentage of Out of school children

% Out of School Children is defined as Non-attendance of an age group, regardless of level of education, expressed as a percentage of the corresponding population

Percentage of pupils over age for grade

% Pupils over age for grade is defined as the total number of pupils whose age at the beginning of the school year is greater than the official age for the grade they are attending, expressed as a percentage of the total number of pupils, regardless of age, attending the grade.

Percentage of pupils under age for grade

% Pupils under age for grade is defined as the total number of pupils whose age at the beginning of the school year is lesser than the official age for the grade they are attending, expressed as a percentage of the total number of pupils, regardless of age, attending the grade.

Population projections are estimates of total size or composition of populations in the future.

Primary aged child laborers who are attending school as a percentage of all

The number of child laborers of official primary school age who are attending school, regardless of level, expressed as a percentage of the total number of primary aged children who are attending school.

The number of children of official primary school age who are child laborers, expressed as a percentage of the total number of primary aged children.

Primary students who are child laborers as a percentage of all

The number of pupils enrolled in primary schools who are also child laborers, expressed as a percentage of total pupils enrolled in primary schools.

Private enrollment as a percentage of all

Private enrollment refers to pupils or students enrolled in institutions that are not operated by a public authority but controlled and managed, whether for profit or not, by a private body such as a nongovernmental organization, religious body, special interest group, foundation or business enterprise.

Promotion rate

Proportion of pupils from a cohort enrolled in a given grade at a given school year who study in the next grade in the following school year.

Public current education expenditure as a % of current government expenditure

Total public expenditure on education (current and capital) expressed as a percentage of total government expenditure in a given financial year.

Public current education expenditure as a % of public education expenditure

Public current expenditure on education expressed as a percentage of total public expenditure on education (current and capital) in a given financial year.

Public current education expenditure by school level as a % of public current education expenditure

The share of public current expenditure for a given education level.

Public education expenditure (% of GDP)

Total public expenditure (current and capital) on education expressed as a percentage of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in a given year.

Public education expenditure as a % of public expenditure

Total public expenditure on education (current and capital) expressed as a percentage of total public expenditure in a given financial year.

Public education expenditure by school level as a % of public education expenditure

Public expenditure for a given education level expressed as a percentage of total public expenditure on education.

Public education expenditure per pupil (% of GDP per capita)

Total number of pupils/Total education budget

Pupil classroom ratio

Average number of pupils (students) per classroom at a specific level of education in a given school year.  Classrooms include rooms or places where teaching or learning activities take place.

Pupil teacher ratio

Average number of pupils (students) per teacher at a specific level of education in a given school year.

Repetition rate

Proportion of pupils from a cohort enrolled in a given grade at a given school year who study in the same grade in the following school year. EPDC also classifies as repeaters those who move down one grade from the previous year to the current year.

School age population

Population of the age-group theoretically corresponding to a given level of education as indicated by theoretical entrance age and duration.

School life expectancy

The total number of years of schooling which a child of a certain age can expect to receive in the future, assuming that the probability of his or her being enrolled in school at any particular age is equal to the current enrolment ratio for that age.

Starting month of the academic year

The month of the calendar year (1=January, 12=December) that the academic year officially begins.

Survival rate

Percentage of a cohort of pupils (or students) enrolled in the first grade of a given level or cycle of education in a  given school year who are expected to reach successive grades.

Teacher salaries (multiple of GDP per capita)

The share of teachers salaries and other remuneration expressed as a multiple of GDP per capita.

Total fertility rate

The average number of children a hypothetical cohort of women would have at the end of their reproductive period if they were subject during their whole lives to the fertility rates of a given period and if they were not subject to mortality. It is expressed as children per woman.

Trained teachers as a % of all

Trained teachers have received at least the minimum formal teacher training (pre-service or in-service) required for teaching at the relevant level.

Transition rate

The number of pupils admitted to the first grade of a higher level of edcuation in a given year, expressed as a percentage of the number of pupils enrolled in the last grade of the lower level of education in the previous year.
