Description

School system indicators describe nominal parameters of a country’s educational system such as the official prescribed age for school entry and the number of grades in a school level. School system parameters often vary across countries and sometimes vary by state or province within a country. An understanding of differences in school system parameters is important in any cross-national comparisons.

Education statistics published by the UNESCO Institute for Statistics follow International Standard Classification of Education (ISCED) classifications of school levels and may not always agree with a country’s own classification system. When this is the case, UIS statistics may not reflect the nature of the official education system for the country. When EPDC is aware of such discrepancies, they are noted on the country pages of our website.
