Reading Native family stories 'like mine'
Cynthia Leitich Smith checked a stack of books out of her local public library almost every Saturday morning as a little girl growing up in the ’70s near Kansas City. She read practically everything she could get her hands on, with one exception. “If I saw books that had Native people on the cover, I wouldn't pick them up,” Smith said.
